So you get your power from green electricity companies and you even make active efforts to recycle in your home – but did you know that there are even more ways you can live an eco-friendly life? The biggest one, and arguably the one that requires the most in the way of lifestyle change, is actively using less energy, especially during the winter months.

We all tend to use more energy during the colder season – more gas to heat our homes and more electricity for our space heaters and heating blankets. But there are ways you can survive the colder months without having to turn up the thermostat or leave the space heater on all night and we will show you how:

1. Better Windows
Even when your windows are closed, cold air can still get in, over time. Some older windows can even be quite drafty. Sure, getting new windows sounds like an expensive investment, and frankly it is, but the amount of money you will save not having to turn on the heat will be worth it.

2. Better Curtains
Some sturdy and thick curtains can do wonders holding back the drafts, especially during particularly windy nights when all that cold air is striking up against your windows.

3. More Layers, Less Heat
By walking around the home with more layers and throwing on a couple more blankets you can conserve your body heat which will make touching the thermostat seem less appealing and save you money.

Eco-friendly living has become a common household term in the past few years. Going completely green can be very expensive and may not fit into every family’s budget. However, there are plenty of smaller, less expensive ways to make households more eco-conscious. Reducing the amount of chemicals used in cleaning is one easy way to help reduce air pollution. In addition, the eco-friendly cleaning products are usually healthier for the family. There are plenty of products available on the shelf, but there are also many regular household ingredients that can be used in place of commercial products. Simple habit changes can have a large impact on creating a more earth-friendly house. Reducing shower times and general water usage, turning off the lights when leaving a room, unplugging appliances not in use are all easy actions that are free. Not only does it help conserve resources, it lowers the monthly energy and utility bills. Doing laundry in the morning or evening will reduce the amount of heat produced in the house and will help the air conditioner avoid trying to overcompensate. There are plenty of ways every family can become more eco-friendly. Most of the local utility companies and local governments have a large amount of information and are more than willing to help families reduce their carbon footprint.

Going green and helping the environment starts in the home. Using something as small as banana peels and apple cores with a mixture of dirt and water to help create compost for plants provides several benefits. It eliminates the amount of food waste sitting in landfills waiting to decompose as well as allowing you to provide a natural fertilizer for your plants.

Instead of throwing out the empty orange juice and milk cartons, use them for plant pots. With the help of construction paper, glue and a little creativity, the ordinary carton can be turned into a pencil or paper clip holder.

Make bird feeders out of empty water bottle instead of throwing them away. During the holidays, adding food color, water and glitter makes a great snow globe craft project for the family. Refill the gallon water jugs with water from fresh water machines. Not only does refilling the water jugs eliminate the use of extra jugs, it saves money. Water from a fresh water machine only cost fractions compared to buying a new gallon of water.

Make sure the garbage bag is filled to capacity before empting the trash. Earn extra money and send those recycle empty cans.

The most obvious things to recycle that will help save the environment is plastic, bottles, can, paper, magazines, anything that falls under this category. Although you can help the environment by separating your garbage when recycling these items, you can also find use of it within your own household as a way to recycle. Plastics and bottles can be reused after wash as a storage and magazines can be shared with friends to save money. Paper towels and newspapers can be used as cleaning supplies, and paper can be used as little scraps of notes or the backs can be used to make copies. There are endless ways to recycle within the house.

Another thing that should be recycle which everyone person owns is clothing. Clothing is not the average item that you can recycle in the garbage. By recycling clothing, it can be donated to others in need of help, given as hand me downs to others who can still wear these items of clothing, and even use torn up clothing as rags around the house. Many arts and crafts projects can be conducted with the use of clothing and therefore it is a great way to recycle. This of course is a way to help you save money as well!

There are many reasons as to why you should recycle to save the environment, but if you want to recycle it’s very important to understand why recycling is such a big part in saving our planet. By recycling paper, plastic or other materials you extend the usefulness of a material that by some is thought to be no longer useful. It may have served the purpose it was originally intended for, but it can also be used to produce other items. This helps explain it more. Almost everything we use on a daily basis is recyclable and although it benefits humans, the most important fact to consider when recycling is that it saves our planet. Recycling saves the earth because it reduces energy, reduces global warming and above all reduces pollutions emitted in the air that may affect our ozone layer. An example of how recycling saves the environment is by taking a look at paper and how it is made. Paper is made from trees and trees give us the oxygen we need to live as humans. Recycling paper will not only keep the earth populated with trees, but will save on energy consumption. It takes less energy to re-create paper, than it does to create paper from a freshly cut tree. By saving energy through industrial production, we also reduce greenhouse gas emissions. These are gases that are released into the air; causing air pollution and deplete the ozone layer. In the end, not only does recycling save the environment, but it saves humans; keeping us in good health and alive for years to come because we have a healthy planet to thrive on.
