Washington Humane Society's Sugar & Champagne 2010 featured sweets and treats

That's it. The Washington Ritz-Carlton has officially gone to the dogs.

Ellen and Todd Gray of Equinox Restaurant and Salamander Hospitality pulled together more than 40 restaurants to roll out their top sweets and temptations Wednesday at the downtown hotel, and paired them with a selection of champagnes. The Washington Humane Society, and many of the 400 or so guests, brought the dogs, which varied even more widely than the desserts. Big, small, noisy, quiet, some sporting white tails ("Hey, it's the Ritz!" said one doggie parent) while others went with a more wintry sweater look (the dogs, not the guests).

The Grays (who - and I'm rolling out an oldie here - have a great story of how they met and eventually opened a restaurant) have organized the benefit for nine years running, and brought along their own canine dynamic duo, a pair of German Shepherds.

VIP Chefs for the night included Gray, Cathal Armstrong of Restaurant Eve, R.J. Cooper of Vidalia, Robert Wiedmaier of Marcel's/Brasserie Beck and Brabo, Kyle Bailey of Birch and Barley and Ryan Witcher of The Ritz-Carlton, Washington, D.C.
